The second weekend of October delivered the kind of Saturday that can completely reshape a season.
No. 1 Texas lost to Oklahoma, No. 6 Alabama fell at home to Georgia, No. 10 LSU lost in overtime at Kentucky, No. 13 Oregon was upset by unbeaten UCLA, No. 16 Florida was routed by South Carolina, and No. 25 Pittsburgh suffered its first loss against North Carolina.
When the dust settled, Georgia had perhaps the strongest claim to the new No. 1 ranking, while the number of undefeated FBS teams had dwindled to nine.
No. 2 Georgia 20, No. 6 Alabama 17
Georgia finally went into Tuscaloosa and beat Alabama.
The Bulldogs accumulated 455 yards, including 206 on the ground, and controlled the ball for more than 33 minutes. Gunner Stockton completed 18 of 22 passes for 249 yards and a touchdown while also rushing for a score.
Alabama led 14-10 at halftime, but Georgia regained the lead on Stockton's 14-yard touchdown run in the third quarter. After the Crimson Tide tied it at 17, Peyton Woodring's 23-yard field goal with 5:27 remaining provided the winning points.
Georgia's defense did the rest.
The victory moves the Bulldogs to 6-0, gives Kirby Smart his third career win over Alabama and puts Georgia in prime position to replace Texas at No. 1.
Oklahoma 27, No. 1 Texas 24
Red River chaos returned in Dallas.
Texas led 17-7 at halftime and outgained Oklahoma 382-238, but the Sooners completely flipped the game in the fourth quarter.
Peyton Bowen returned an Arch Manning interception for a touchdown to give Oklahoma a 24-17 lead. Manning responded with a tying touchdown drive, but his second interception came with only 24 seconds remaining.
Oklahoma moved into field-goal range, and Tate Sandell drilled a 47-yarder as time expired.
It was Oklahoma's first victory over an AP No. 1 Texas team and its first Red River victory since 2023. The loss ends Texas' unbeaten season and almost certainly its four-week stay atop the rankings.
Kentucky 35, No. 10 LSU 34, OT
Kentucky has apparently decided that overtime two-point conversions are its specialty.
For the second consecutive week, the Wildcats scored a touchdown in overtime and elected to go for two rather than kick the tying extra point.
CJ Baxter scored from one yard out after LSU had taken a 34-27 overtime lead. Kenny Minchey then kept the ball on the two-point attempt and converted to give Kentucky the walk-off victory.
Baxter rushed for 123 yards and two touchdowns, while Kentucky finished the night without a turnover.
LSU falls to 4-2, while Kentucky improves to 5-1 and should return to the Top 25.
No. 21 UCLA 17, No. 13 Oregon 15
UCLA's perfect season survived Autzen Stadium.
The Bruins overcame three turnovers of their own largely because Oregon committed an astonishing seven turnovers, including five lost fumbles.
Wayne Knight rushed for 103 yards and a touchdown. After Nico Iamaleava was injured, backup Ty Dieffenbach connected with Knight for the touchdown that put UCLA ahead 17-6 early in the fourth quarter.
Oregon rallied and pulled within two on a late touchdown, but another fumble on the game's final desperation play ended the comeback.
UCLA improves to 5-0 and wins in Eugene for the first time since 2004. Oregon, once ranked No. 2 in the preseason, falls to 3-2.
No. 7 Indiana 20, Nebraska 17
Indiana remained unbeaten, but Nebraska made the defending national champions earn every bit of it.
The Hoosiers trailed 17-6 early in the fourth quarter before Josh Hoover and Nick Marsh took over.
Hoover found Marsh for a 75-yard touchdown, then hit him again for a 44-yard score with 7:21 remaining. Marsh finished with six receptions for 187 yards and two touchdowns.
Indiana possessed the ball for only 20:27 and ran just 44 plays, yet still produced 328 yards.
The Hoosiers are now 6-0.
South Carolina 38, No. 16 Florida 19
Florida's season has changed dramatically in two weeks.
After climbing into the Top 10 following its win over Ole Miss, the Gators have now been blown out by Missouri and South Carolina in consecutive games.
LaNorris Sellers accounted for five touchdowns, throwing for 279 yards and four scores while adding another touchdown on the ground. South Carolina played turnover-free football while Florida committed three giveaways.
The Gamecocks scored 21 second-half points and never allowed Florida to mount a serious comeback.
The Gators are now 4-2 and likely headed out of the rankings.
North Carolina 21, No. 25 Pittsburgh 17
Pittsburgh's unbeaten season came to an abrupt end.
UNC quarterback Billy Edwards Jr. threw for 249 yards and two touchdowns, including the decisive 75-yard touchdown pass to Shamar Easter just 13 seconds after Pitt had taken a 17-14 lead in the fourth quarter.
Pitt actually controlled possession for more than 36 minutes and outgained UNC 369-269, but two interceptions and an inability to finish late proved costly.
The win gives Bill Belichick his first victory over a ranked opponent at North Carolina.
No. 14 Missouri 27, Texas A&M 6
Missouri followed its demolition of Florida with another convincing SEC performance.
Running back Jamal Roberts rushed for 222 yards and two touchdowns, giving him 433 rushing yards over the past two games.
The Missouri defense was even better. Texas A&M managed just 216 total yards, and Marcel Reed threw two interceptions.
The Tigers have suddenly become one of the SEC's most interesting teams at 5-1.
No. 3 Notre Dame 58, Stanford 7
Notre Dame showed absolutely no interest in making this competitive.
The Irish led 37-0 at halftime, finished with 598 yards and averaged 8.1 yards per play.
Jonaz Walton rushed for 181 yards on only 13 carries, including a 97-yard touchdown, while CJ Carr threw three touchdown passes.
Notre Dame is now 6-0 and has increasingly looked like a team capable of returning to the playoff.
No. 5 Ohio State 45, Maryland 16
Ohio State followed its impressive victory at Iowa with another dominant afternoon.
Julian Sayin threw for 242 yards and four touchdowns, while Jeremiah Smith caught four passes for 93 yards and two scores. Bo Jackson added 107 rushing yards and two touchdowns.
The Buckeyes finished with 449 yards while holding Maryland to just 146.
Ohio State moves to 5-1 and continues building momentum after its early loss at Texas.
No. 9 Ole Miss 52, Vanderbilt 17
Ole Miss appears to have recovered from its Florida disaster.
The Rebels raced to a 42-3 halftime lead, forcing four Vanderbilt turnovers and turning the game into a rout before intermission.
Trinidad Chambliss threw for 213 yards and three touchdowns, while Ole Miss produced touchdowns through the air, on the ground and defensively.
The Rebels improve to 4-1.
No. 15 Tennessee 24, Arkansas 17
Tennessee survived a difficult afternoon in Fayetteville.
The Volunteers trailed 14-7 in the third quarter before rallying behind their running game. DeSean Bishop rushed for 138 yards, including the eight-yard touchdown with two minutes remaining that broke a 17-17 tie.
Tennessee committed three turnovers, but its defense held Arkansas to 288 yards.
The Volunteers improve to 5-1.
No. 19 USC 31, Penn State 23
USC finally won a significant game in the Eastern time zone.
Jayden Maiava threw for 301 yards and three touchdowns without an interception, while King Miller rushed for 102 yards and another score.
Penn State trailed just 24-23 entering the fourth quarter before Maiava found Kayden Dixon-Wyatt for the touchdown that gave USC its final eight-point margin.
The Trojans move to 6-1, while Penn State's nightmare continues at 3-3 after a third consecutive loss.
No. 22 Houston 35, Kansas State 16
Houston controlled this one from the start.
Conner Weigman threw for 242 yards and four touchdowns, all four of them to Patrick Overmyer. The Cougars accumulated 475 yards while playing turnover-free football.
Houston improves to 5-1 and continues to establish itself as a legitimate factor in the Big 12 race.
No. 18 Oklahoma State 42, UCF 28
Oklahoma State needed a strong fourth quarter to put UCF away.
The game was tied 21-21 at halftime before the Cowboys gradually seized control. Drew Mestemaker threw for 304 yards and two touchdowns, and Oklahoma State scored 18 points in the fourth quarter.
A defensive fumble return for a touchdown helped break open what had been a tight game.
No. 12 Utah 41, Kansas 24
Utah remains unbeaten after another powerful rushing performance.
Wayshawn Parker ran for 171 yards and two touchdowns, including a spectacular 90-yard fourth-quarter score, while Devon Dampier threw three touchdowns and rushed for another.
Utah finished with 545 yards and held the ball for more than 39 minutes.
The Utes are now 5-0.
No. 23 Boise State 38, Fresno State 31
The final ranked game of the night went to Boise State.
The Broncos survived Fresno State in a high-scoring late-night rivalry game, escaping the Central Valley with a 38-31 victory and keeping themselves in the Top 25 conversation.
Friday night: No. 20 Iowa and No. 8 BYU take care of business
The ranked weekend actually began Friday.
No. 20 Iowa bounced back from its Ohio State loss by beating Washington 41-24 in Seattle, an impressive response after the Hawkeyes suffered their first defeat of the season.
Later, No. 8 BYU beat Iowa State 24-10, keeping the Cougars unbeaten and firmly in the Big 12 and playoff discussion.
The weekend's big picture
Three top-10 teams lost: No. 1 Texas, No. 6 Alabama and No. 10 LSU.
Georgia's road win at Alabama, combined with Texas' Red River collapse, leaves the Bulldogs positioned to become the country's new No. 1 team when the next AP poll is released.
UCLA may have made the weekend's biggest upward move, going into Autzen Stadium and remaining undefeated. Kentucky should return to the rankings. Missouri continues to surge. Indiana, Notre Dame, BYU and Utah all remained perfect.
Florida and Pittsburgh, meanwhile, may disappear from the Top 25 altogether.
The first weekend of October shook up the rankings. The second weekend blew a hole through them.
