This weekend's schedule has a clear centerpiece: No. 4 Ohio State at No. 5 Indiana in Bloomington, a matchup between the Big Ten's two most recent national champions and a rematch of last season's conference title game. But the depth behind it is excellent, with Notre Dame-BYU, Alabama-Tennessee, Missouri-Ole Miss, Mississippi State-LSU and Oklahoma State-Houston all matching ranked teams.
The weekend actually begins Friday with an important Big Ten game between Washington and Purdue.
Friday: Washington at Purdue
5:00 PM PT (8:00 PM ET) | FOX
Neither team is ranked, but this is worth including because both are trying to keep their seasons pointed in the right direction.
Purdue enters 3-3 and has won two of its first three Big Ten games, including a 41-13 rout of Minnesota last week. Running back Fame Ijeboi has become the centerpiece of the offense, rushing for 549 yards and nine touchdowns, including 195 yards and three scores against the Gophers.
Washington is also 3-3 but has lost three straight conference games to Minnesota, USC and Iowa after beginning 3-0. The Huskies have been competitive, but quarterback Demond Williams Jr. has already been sacked 19 times.
Friday gives Purdue a chance to continue its surprising Big Ten start while Washington tries to stop its September momentum from completely disappearing.
No. 4 Ohio State at No. 5 Indiana
9:00 AM PT (12:00 PM ET) | FOX
This is the game of the weekend.
Indiana is 6-0, 3-0 in the Big Ten and riding a 22-game winning streak. The defending national champions are also 19-0 at home under Curt Cignetti. Ohio State arrives 5-1 and 3-0 in conference play, with its only loss coming in the dramatic collapse at Texas.
And there is unfinished business.
Indiana beat Ohio State 13-10 in last season's Big Ten Championship Game, one of the defining victories of the Hoosiers' championship season. Now Ohio State gets its first opportunity for revenge, this time in Bloomington.
The history overwhelmingly favors the Buckeyes. Ohio State leads the all-time series 81-13-5, and the Buckeyes won their most recent game in Bloomington 23-3 in 2023. But this Indiana program bears almost no resemblance to the ones Ohio State dominated for decades.
The matchup also features one of college football's biggest stars in Ohio State receiver Jeremiah Smith against an Indiana team that has repeatedly shown it can win close games. Josh Hoover and Nick Marsh rescued the Hoosiers last week at Nebraska, connecting for fourth-quarter touchdowns of 75 and 44 yards in a 20-17 comeback.
For Indiana, this is the first top-five matchup ever played at Memorial Stadium. For Ohio State, it is a chance to reassert itself as the Big Ten's standard.
It feels less like a midseason conference game and more like an early playoff game.
No. 16 Mississippi State at No. 22 LSU
9:00 AM PT (12:00 PM ET)
Both teams enter needing a response.
Mississippi State's undefeated start ended against Alabama, while LSU is coming off its crushing 35-34 overtime loss at Kentucky.
LSU has already absorbed two conference defeats and cannot afford another if it wants to remain relevant in the SEC race. Mississippi State, meanwhile, has shown enough explosiveness with Kamario Taylor to make Tiger Stadium uncomfortable if LSU turns the ball over or starts slowly.
Florida at No. 7 Texas
9:00 AM PT (12:00 PM ET)
Two teams whose seasons have changed dramatically meet in Austin.
Texas was No. 1 only a week ago before Oklahoma stunned the Longhorns 27-24 at the Cotton Bowl. Florida has suffered an even sharper fall, going from the Top 10 to unranked after consecutive blowout losses to Missouri and South Carolina.
Texas needs to show the Oklahoma loss was rivalry chaos rather than a deeper concern. Florida needs to prove it can stop the slide altogether.
No. 25 Northwestern at Michigan State
9:00 AM PT (12:00 PM ET)
Northwestern has quietly become one of the Big Ten's more interesting stories.
The Wildcats are 4-1 and recently demolished Penn State 34-13 before scoring 45 against Ball State. Michigan State is 2-4 and winless in conference play.
There is also an unusual subplot: Michigan State coach Pat Fitzgerald faces Northwestern, the program he once led for nearly two decades. Fitzgerald is in his first season with the Spartans.
Virginia at No. 24 SMU
9:00 AM PT (12:00 PM ET)
SMU has worked its way back into the rankings and now gets Virginia at home.
For the Mustangs, this is the type of ACC game they need to win if they want to remain in the conference race. Virginia has enough offensive ability to make it uncomfortable, but SMU gets the advantage of Ford Stadium.
Arizona State at No. 10 Texas Tech
12:30 PM PT (3:30 PM ET)
Texas Tech has reached the Top 10 and now faces another important Big 12 test.
The Red Raiders have been one of the conference's most consistent teams, and this game represents another checkpoint in whether they can turn a strong September into a genuine championship run.
Arizona State is dangerous enough offensively that Texas Tech cannot treat this as simply another home game.
Auburn at No. 1 Georgia
12:30 PM PT (3:30 PM ET) | ESPN
Georgia returns home after finally breaking through in Tuscaloosa.
The Bulldogs' 20-17 victory over Alabama pushed them to 6-0 and No. 1, and now comes the emotional challenge of resetting for the Deep South's Oldest Rivalry.
Kirby Smart emphasized exactly that this week. Georgia beat Auburn 31-13 the last time the Tigers visited Athens in 2024.
Auburn would love nothing more than to turn Georgia's Alabama celebration into a one-week high.
No. 13 Missouri at No. 9 Ole Miss
12:30 PM PT (3:30 PM ET)
One of Saturday's most underrated games is in Oxford.
Missouri is 5-1 and has responded to its Mississippi State loss by hammering Florida and Texas A&M. Running back Jamal Roberts has become one of the hottest players in the country.
Ole Miss countered its own Florida loss by crushing Vanderbilt 52-17.
There is also a surprising historical note: Ole Miss is seeking its first victory over Missouri since 1974.
This feels like a game that could have significant SEC tiebreaker implications later.
No. 6 Alabama at No. 14 Tennessee
12:30 PM PT (3:30 PM ET)
The Third Saturday in October arrives with both programs in the Top 15.
Alabama is coming off its first loss, a 20-17 home defeat to Georgia. Tennessee has won two straight since its narrow loss to Texas and continues to lean heavily on DeSean Bishop and its running game.
The uniforms will add another layer to an already great rivalry. Both teams will wear their home jerseys in Knoxville for the first time since 1970, with Alabama in crimson and Tennessee in orange.
Alabama leads the all-time series 61-39-8, but Neyland Stadium has become a much less comfortable place for the Tide in recent years.
Florida State at No. 3 Miami
4:00 PM PT (7:00 PM ET)
Miami remains unbeaten and gets its biggest rivalry game at home.
The Hurricanes made a major statement two weeks ago by going into Clemson and winning 41-13, showing that their climb into the national top five was justified.
Florida State has been inconsistent, but rivalry games rarely follow form. Miami has considerably more at stake, with an undefeated season, ACC position and playoff hopes all on the line.
No. 18 Oklahoma State at No. 20 Houston
4:30 PM PT (7:30 PM ET) | FOX
This might be the best Big 12 game of the weekend.
Oklahoma State is 4-1 and 2-0 in conference play, while Houston is 5-1 and 2-1. The Cowboys have also scored more than 40 points in three consecutive games for the first time since 2018.
Houston has quietly built one of the conference's best resumes, with Conner Weigman coming off a four-touchdown performance against Kansas State.
This is a legitimate Big 12 race game.
No. 2 Notre Dame at No. 8 BYU
4:30 PM PT (7:30 PM ET)
The night's biggest game may be in Provo.
Notre Dame is 6-0 after annihilating Stanford 58-7. BYU is also unbeaten after beating Iowa State 24-10.
The atmosphere should be spectacular. College GameDay is visiting BYU for only the second time ever and the first time since 2009.
Notre Dame brings one of the country's deepest offenses. BYU brings altitude, home-field intensity and an unbeaten record.
If Ohio State-Indiana is the afternoon centerpiece, Notre Dame-BYU is the nightcap with the most playoff weight.
Wisconsin at No. 12 UCLA
4:30 PM PT (7:30 PM ET)
UCLA returns home after one of the biggest wins of its season, a 17-15 victory at Oregon.
The Bruins remain undefeated, but Wisconsin has already demonstrated that it can win difficult road games after its comeback at Penn State earlier this season.
The contrast is interesting: UCLA's speed and offensive creativity against Wisconsin's preference for physical, controlled football.
No. 15 Kentucky at Oklahoma
4:30 PM PT (7:30 PM ET)
Kentucky has become appointment viewing.
The Wildcats are 5-1 and have won four straight, including two consecutive 35-34 overtime games, both decided when Kentucky successfully went for two rather than settling for another overtime.
Now they visit an Oklahoma team coming off its biggest victory of the season, the 27-24 upset of No. 1 Texas.
This might be the weekend's most unpredictable matchup.
No. 11 Utah at Colorado
7:15 PM PT (10:15 PM ET)
Utah remains undefeated and takes its physical style to Boulder.
The Utes have dominated this series recently, winning eight of the last nine meetings and 12 of the last 14.
Colorado has enough skill talent to make the late-night environment interesting, but Utah enters looking increasingly like a serious Big 12 and playoff contender.
No. 21 Wake Forest at California
7:30 PM PT (10:30 PM ET)
The ranked weekend closes in Berkeley.
This will be only the second meeting ever between Wake Forest and Cal, and just the third trip to California in Wake Forest football history.
The late kickoff and cross-country travel create a very different kind of test for the Demon Deacons.
The weekend picture
The schedule has several strong games, but everything begins with Ohio State-Indiana.
A year ago, Indiana beating Ohio State for the Big Ten championship would have sounded almost impossible. Now the Hoosiers are defending national champions, riding a 22-game winning streak, and hosting Ohio State in the first top-five matchup Bloomington has ever seen.
Behind it, Notre Dame-BYU has enormous playoff implications, Alabama-Tennessee brings rivalry history and a unique uniform spectacle, Missouri-Ole Miss could shape the SEC race, and Oklahoma State-Houston could do the same in the Big 12.
By Saturday night, there may be significantly fewer unbeaten teams left.
